The book “The Five Love Languages” was released in 1992 written by a Baptist pastor, Gary Chapman. Its purpose was to outline five general ways that partners express and experience love. The goal of the reader was to identify their “love language” while also identifying their partners. The hope was then to apply your partners love language, so they truly felt loved, loved in a way they understood and desired. That in turn could result in a successful relationship for both parties because you are “speaking” their love language. Not surprisingly, this book has been a New York Times bestseller for many years with over twenty million copies sold and even becoming a “perennial fixture” on the bestseller list according to online sources. I say “not surprisingly” because I believe most of humanity has the deep longing to feel loved. It’s a natural Creator-given feeling to love and receive love. Here are the 5 ways of expressing and experiencing love based on this bestselling book.
While a specific item might be more predominant with a certain individual over another, we can all agree there is a common theme for them all, they are actions. These 5 behaviors are verbs. They cannot be felt or confirmed by the recipient unless the giver puts them to action. Through the years of my spiritual journey, I have always asked: “What more can I do to please You? What can I do today to show You that I love You?” One morning that request dove deeper into my soul and I realized that what I’m truly asking is: “What is His love language?” If over 20 million readers want to discover how to express love in the way their partner desires, resulting in a successful relationship… why wouldn’t those who claim they love YHWH have that same longing to love Him as he desires? How can we speak His love language? Can a seeker clearly find those answers and apply them resulting in a successful relationship with our Father in Heaven? Discovering His love language What is His love language? The good news is we can find that answer! It is clearly written in the pages of an even better selling book. In fact, the Scriptures (Bible) is the best bestselling book of all time, with an estimated 5 to 7 billion copies sold. It’s also one of the oldest and most widely read books in history. Through my continued years of study however, I have discovered that languages, interpretations, scholars and traditions the Word of Elohim can and has been twisted, watered down and misunderstood resulting in confusion or simple ignorance of what it reveals. So, if we want to express the love language our Elohim desires from us, it is critical that we examine all things and study to show ourselves approved. 1 Thessalonians 5:21, 2 Timothy 2:15, 2 Peter 3:14-18 Ears to hear and eyes to see It is clear and dare I say, common sense that love is a verb. The simple list of the above 5 love languages is a prime example that without applying them, an individual fails to express their love. Furthermore, the recipient lacks knowing and feeling that they are loved. The same holds true in our relationship with YHWH. Outside of the simple bubble of belief, actions are required. In fact, actions are the variable that separates us from demons, according to James. “You believe that Elohim is one. You do well. The demons also believe – and shudder! But do you want to know, O foolish man, that belief without the works is dead?” Here James is expressing to the assembly of “believers” that if you just believe, you are not any different than the demons as they also believe and fear Elohim. The key is there needs to be love and obeisance with that belief - that love is expressed to our Father by our works (actions). While this verse is not alone, the false idea that “works are a bad” has been riddled and tainted throughout doctrine. The lie that “we can do nothing because Messiah did it all”, goes against Scripture in every way. While we do know our Messiah came to renew the broken Covenant and became our Passover Lamb by the shedding of His blood, giving us hope and the ability to one day become His bride for eternity, that does not cancel out our part of being faithful loving brides. In fact, it is the reason to be loyal and committed, expressing our love to Him by our works (actions of love). To drive this point to the heart, let’s read Messiah’s words… “If you love Me, you shall guard My Commands.” John 14:15 “He who possesses My Commands and guards them, it is he who loves Me. And He who loves Me shall be loved by My Father, and I shall love him and manifest Myself to him.” John 14:21 As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you. Stay in My love. If you guard My Commands, you shall stay in My love, even as I have guarded My Father’s Commands and stay in His love. John 15:9,10 These few verses seem quite clear, don’t they? Let’s look at another interesting verse in John when our Messiah is praying to the Father… “And this is everlasting life, that they should know You, the only true Elohim, and Yahushua Messiah whom You have sent.” John 17:3 So, what does it mean to “know” the Father? The word “know” in Hebrew is yada. Recall the verse in Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know (yada) that I am Elohim; I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth!” Yada consists of the Hebrew letters Yod (to work or make), Dalet (pathway, door) and Ayin (to see, to know, to watch). Interestingly, lets read what John describes as those who do know Him and those who do NOT know Him… “And by this we know that we know Him, if we guard His Commands. The one who says, ‘I know Him,’ and does not guard His Commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever guards His Word, truly the love of Elohim has been perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. The one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked. Beloved, I write no fresh command to you, but an old Command which you have had from the beginning. The old Command is the Word which you heard from the beginning.” 1 John 2:3-7 It seems clear that to know Him is to obey Him, to stay in Him is to obey Him, and to love Him is to obey Him. If we circle back to Messiah’s words in John 15:9 (above) He instructs us to “Stay in My love” and we do that by guarding His Commands just as John as emphasized by stating “the one who says he stays in Him ought himself also to walk, even as He walked.” So, how did He walk? There is no debate He lived a sinless life. Meaning, He walked and lived out Torah. The righteous instructions (Commandments) of His Father. That is evident and documented through eye witnesses, scholars and even His own words, “…I have guarded My Father’s Commands and stay in His love.” John 15:10 That is what made Him the perfect unblemished Lamb who was offered as a pure sacrifice for the remission of our sins. All believers know this, yet it is the “religious leaders” that add to and taint His Word by stating that because He walked (works, actions) in Torah, believers do not need to do the “works” – they just need to believe. Simply from a handful of verses examined above, we can clearly see that is a lie. If we choose to believe and live that lie after discovering otherwise, we have a spirit of rebellion. Again, James expresses that the demons believe, but they do not obey. Their heart is far from Me
Another great example of those who defiantly rejecting obedience is the account written in Matthew. This is Messiah Yahushua rebuking the Pharisees as they accused Him of transgressing the “tradition of the elders”. It was an added tradition of washing their hands before eating. While it makes sense to “wash before supper” as I grew up hearing by my parents, it is not a command that leads to death for not doing so. In fact, Yahushua responds with the following… “But He answering, said to them ‘Why do you also transgress the Command of Elohim because of your tradition? For Elohim has commanded, saying, ‘Respect your father and your mother’ (Exodus 20:12) and ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death’ (Leviticus 20:9). “But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, Whatever profit you might have received from me has been dedicated. Is certainly released from respecting his father or mother.’ “So you have nullified the Command of Elohim by your tradition. Hypocrites! Isaiah rightly prophesied about you, saying, ‘This people draw near to Me with their mouth, and respect Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as teachings the commands of men.’ “ Matthew 15:3-9 Notice Yahushua is quoting the Torah. The clear instructions given by Elohim to His people, people who said yes to the marriage vows at Sinai and received the marriage contract and terms of the Covenant (Exodus 19:8, 24:7). This same Covenant is what Yahushua walked, lived and constantly reminded the surrounding believers to follow and obey. It is YHWH’s love language. It is what He hears from us. It alone does not bring about salvation as we need our mediator Yahushua Messiah for that. However, it is a sign and proof of our love toward the “One who is saving”. Let’s read in Isaiah what Yahushua had quoted… “Because this people has drawn near with its mouth, and with its lips they have esteemed Me, and it has kept its heart far from Me, and their reverence of Me has become a command of men that is taught!” While this verse is specifically in chapter Isaiah 29:13, I suggest a seeker start at chapter 28 and read through to the end of chapter 30. It gives the context that YHWH was angry and His wrath was going to be poured out on those who were not obeying. They were not showing their love for Him by walking in His instructions for living. While they esteemed Him with their lips their heart (love) was far from Him. They were all talk and no action. There was also a clear warning through the prophet Ezekiel of this same theme. YHWH was quite wroth with His people, He sent Ezekiel as a watchmen, to warn and to remind them they are transgressing His Torah. Quite clearly the entire chapter of Ezekiel 33 demands that they “turn from his (their) way and live”. In other words, get on board with YHWH’s love language, start showing Him who you believe in and belong to. Show Him through your actions and those actions are obedience to His instructions. Sadly, this was their response to YHWH’s warning through Ezekiel… “And they come to you as people do, and they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them. For with their mouth they show much love – their hearts pursue their greedy gain. And see, you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and playing well on an instrument. And they hear your words, but they do not do them.” Ezekiel 33:31,32 Can we see the pattern here of belief without works is dead? Saying you love but not doing the actions to prove it? After reading from just 2 examples in Isaiah and Ezekiel it makes much more sense when James says “My brothers, what use is it for anyone to say he has belief but does not have works? This belief is unable to save him.” (James) 2:14) And also “For as the body without the spirit is dead, so also the belief is dead without the works” (James 2:26). Those “works” are YHWH’s love language. Let's revisit the book regarding the 5 love languages. If a person tells their spouse that their love language is quality time yet the spouse chooses to not spend quality time with them, what are they truly saying? What if the love language is acts of service yet the spouse refuses to help in any way, They decide they want to do it their way, not the desired way of the recipient. How would that make their partner feel? And would their actions, or lack there of, prove what is in their heart? Let's read a few more verses in Scripture that couples showing our love for Him and guarding His Commands... "And you shall know that YHWH your Elohim, He is Elohim, the trustworthy El guarding Covenant and kindness for a thousand generations with those who love Him, and those who guard His Commands." Deuteronomy 7:9 "And I prayed to YHWH my Elohim, and made confession, and said, "O YHWH, great and awesome El, guarding the Covenant and the kindness to those who love Him, and to those who guard His Commands." Daniel 9:4 "I pray, YHWH Elohim of the heavens, O great and awesome El, guarding the Covenant and kindness with those who love You, and with those guarding Your Commands." Nehemiah 1:5 YHWH again addresses this important topic of obeying in Deuteronomy 5. Just as Moses had finished reiterating the 10 Commandments and the events that took place at Mt. Sinai, he shares YHWH's desire... "Oh, that they had such a heart in them, to revere Me and to guard all My Commands always, so that it might be well with them and with their children forever!" Deuteronomy 5:29 Yahushua drives the point to the heart again when He stated “Do not think that I came to destroy the Torah or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to complete (pleroo). For truly, I say to you, till the heavens and the earth pass away, one yod or one tittle shall by no means pass from the Torah till all be done.” Matthew 5:17,18 As discussed in many of my previous blogs and all my books, the English word “complete” comes from the Greek pleroo which is better defined as to make full, to fully preach. We know “complete” cannot mean to destroy or eradicate as He clearly states in the same sentence that He did not come to destroy the Torah. He came to give it meaning, show the fullness of it and that we can walk as He walked. He was pointing believers to the way to walk and the way to love. His love is not action-less You might be familiar with what’s known as “the blessings and the curses” written in Deuteronomy 28. There is an elaborate list of blessings promised to those who love Him. In fact, He states that the blessings (love actions) will be given to us based on the following… “And it shall be, if you diligently obey the voice of YHWH your Elohim, to guard to do all His Commands which I command you today, that YHWH your Elohim shall make you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of YHWH your Elohim.” Deuteronomy 28:1,2 “YHWH establishes you as a set-apart (qodesh) people to Himself, as He has sworn to you, if you guard the Commands of YHWH your Elohim and walk in His Ways.” Deuteronomy 28:9 Both of these promises are surrounded by an abundance of blessings. Blessings that every human being desires in life. For example, He promises to bless us in the city and in the field. Blessing the fruit of our bodies, the fruit of our ground, our livestock, increasing our increases. Blessing us coming in and going out and causing our enemies to be smitten before our face. Blessing our storehouses and all we put our hand to. The list goes on and the point is clear… IF we act out our love for Him by living His instructions, THEN He will return that love by providing all we need. It’s really that simple. For those who have eaten and digested the false food from religious leaders believing that His Commands are too hard or that they are not instructed toward Christians, then I ask… in Romans 11, it states that we are grafted into the olive tree, what olive tree is the writer of Romans referring to? There is only one olive tree, and it is Yisrael and we become a part of Yisrael through Messiah's sacrifice and then our obedience to Him. Here are some verses that confirm this… “Let us hear the conclusion of the entire matter: Revere Elohim and guard His Commands, for this is to all mankind?” Ecclesiastes 12:13 “Blessed are those doing His Commands, so that the authority shall be theirs unto the tree of life, and to enter through the gates into the city.” Revelation 22:14 The writer of Romans goes on to say that we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, so that we prove what is that good and well-pleasing and perfect desire of Elohim. I believe we have clearly discussed the desire of Elohim. I’ve heard many say “we are not saved by works” yet they seem to be missing the whole of what being saved entails. Yes, we need Messiah… we are not saved only by our works as He is our Mediator, the Lamb of Elohim who was the only One who could renew the broken Covenant, thus we are fully reliant on Him. The key is however, that we need both. We need Him and we need obedience to prove we serve and belong to Him. He makes this very clear in Matthew when he talks about a mass group of people in the future who will refer to Him as their Master (Lord). “Not everyone who says to Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter into the reign of the heavens, but he who is doing the desire of My Father in the heavens. Many shall say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your Name, and cast out demons in Your Name, and done many mighty works in Your Name?’ “And then I shall declare to them, ‘I never knew you, depart from Me, you who work lawlessness (anomia)!” Matthew 7:21-23 There are many key words to take away from this verse. Notice they call Him Lord or Master. Yet their actions speak otherwise, as similarly discussed in Isaiah and Ezekiel. Also notice they were active doing their own love language, not His. He very clearly states “I never knew you” – there is the “know” word again. And He then reveals that their works were not of Torah. They were lawlessness or Torahless (anomia) meaning without Torah. I will conclude with another spot-on instruction from James. “And become doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Because if anyone is a hearer of the Word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror, for he looks at himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what he was like. But he that looked into the perfect Torah, that of freedom, and continues in it, not becoming a hearer that forgets, but a doer of work, this one shall be blessed in his doing.” James 1:22-25 If you haven’t already, start becoming a doer. Start speaking YHWH’s love language via your actions. Start with the 10 Commandments and learn them. Start implementing them in your life – walk them out. Walk like Yahushua. Prove your love by your actions, not just by your thoughts nor by your lips but by doing. By doing, you will find that His instructions are not hard but rather a privilege, a privilege to show Him we love Him. And by becoming doers, speaking His love language will naturally set us apart from this World. That is our Creator's love language.
